Oregon grape holly ( Mahonia aquifolium Compacta )-- purple, broad-leaved evergreen; about four feet tall.
The Oregon Grape " Mahonia aquifolium " ( AKA hollyleaved barberry ) and Highbush Cranberry " Viburnum opulus " were accidentally re-introduced as escaped landscaping plants, and may all be Oregonian Subspecies.
In garden conditions, and where their ranges overlap in nature, this species hybridizes readily with Oregon-grape ( " Mahonia aquifolium " ), and the hybrids are less prostrate in their habit than the pure stock.
Fire suppression efforts at the California sites have resulted in overgrowth of native trees and shrubs such as Oregon-grape ( " Mahonia aquifolium " ) and curl-leaf mountain mahogany ( " Cercocarpus ledifolius " ), which shade out small wildflowers such as mariposa lilies.
